A total of 36 members of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and Barangay Health Workers in Barangay Casiaman, Bacnotan and Ramot, Santol were trained on honey liquid hand soap making conducted by the National Apiculture Research, Training and Development Institute (NARTDI) on November 16 and 18, 2021, respectively.
The training includes lectures and hands-on activity on the Importance of Hand Washing in the Prevention of Infectious Diseases by Mr. Lester E. Orpilla, Honey Liquid Hand Soap Making by Prof. Carol A. Akilith, and Business Plan Making by Dr. Venelyn L. Bersamira.
Prof. Carolyn A. Akilith, Head of NARTDI Bee Product Development and Project Leader, said the project will allow the participants to earn an extra income while providing the community with cost-effective liquid hand soap.
“Honey as an additional ingredient in soap making exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, and antiparasitic activity; hence, this could help mitigate COVID-19 and other infectious diseases,” Prof. Akilith added.
“Agyaman kami ti DMMMSU-NARTDI iti oportunidad nga indanun da ditoy baranggaymi tapnu agbalin nga pagrugian a livelihood dagiti miyembro iti 4Ps ken makatulong nga malappedan iti daytoy agraraira nga COVID-19 (We thank DMMMSU-NARTDI for this opportunity given to our barangay that could help 4Ps members to start a livelihood and to help prevent the spread of COVID-19)” expressed by Mr. Jose O. Cario, Barangay Kagawad of Ramot, Santol.
The training is part of the pre-implementation of the Project CoBEED-Community-based Extension and Enterprise: DMMMSU-NARTDI’s Defiance to the Pandemic, an approved extension program of the Institute which will be expanded in other municipalities in La Union by 2022. (Lester Orpilla)
