The National Apiculture Research Training and Development Institute (NARTDI) plays a fundamental role in safeguarding communities and businesses from the potential threats posed by honeybee colonies. One such recent instance exemplifies NARTDI’s commitment to extending technical assistance and ensuring public safety.
On February 25, 2024, the proprietor of the EM Royalle Hotel and Beach Resort in San Juan, La Union, through Engr. Leenard S. Dulay, reached out to NARTDI seeking assistance in addressing a honeybee colony dilemma. Recognizing the potential risks associated with the presence of the “Apis dorsata” colony near the resort entrance, Engr. Dulay sought preemptive measure to alleviate concerns and maintain a safe environment for the resort costumers.
Upon receiving Engr. Dulay’s request, NARTDI promptly mobilized its team to assess and address the situation. Understanding the urgency of the matter and the implications for both public safety and the resort’s reputation, NARTDI deployed a special crew to the site.
Composed of seasoned beekeeping professionals, NARTDI executed an action to safely drive the honeybee colony away from the resort premises. Utilizing best practices in bee removal and relocation, the team ensured minimal disruption to the bees while prioritizing the safety of the resort guests and staff. The successful resolution of this incident underscores the importance of proactive collaboration between businesses and specialized entities like NARTDI.
NARTDI’s swift and effective response to the honeybee colony threat exemplifies its dedication to serving the needs of communities and businesses alike. Through strategic intervention, expert guidance, and community engagement, NARTDI continues to mitigate risks and foster resilience in the face of nature’s complexities. As businesses and communities adapt to changing environmental challenges, NARTDI stands ready to provide continuous support and expertise. (By Arvin C. Tuyan)
