DMMMSU, PalawanSU team up to strengthen Palawan’s Bee Industry

Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) National Apiculture Research Training and Development Institute (NARTDI), and Palawan State University (PalawanSU) are teaming up to revive and strengthen the beekeeping industry in Palawan on June 18, 2024.

The discussion was spearheaded by  NARTDI Executive Director Dr. Joseph A. Panas, who met with the key officials from PalawanSU, including Dr. Ramon M. Docto (President), Dr. Marjorie A. Española (Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension) and Dr. Venzon L. Limpiada (Vice President for Finance and Administration).

Dr. Panas proposed establishing PalawanSU as the Apiculture Satellite Center in Palawan. He also proposed several programs for collaboration, which include basic beekeeping training at NARTDI for PalawanSU representatives.

Moreover, the NARTDI team also met with Ms. Melissa U. Macasaet, City Agriculturist of Puerto Princesa, and the local beekeepers to discuss the state of beekeeping projects in their area.

Palawan local beekeepers emphasized the need for streamlined provincial policies that recognize legitimate honey producers and simplify honey transport to external markets. Addressing the challenges of inter-island transport of various bee species, particularly stingless bees, was also highlighted as essential for the sustainability and growth of beekeeping in Palawan.

Furthermore, a draft Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the two institutions is under review to formalize the partnership. (By Arvin C. Tuyan)
